Marital/Couples therapy

Be aware that most health insurance plans exclude couples or marital therapy, considering it “not medically necessary.”  In the case of plans that do reimburse for this modality of treatment, they usually require that one member of the couple have a covered mental health diagnosis (e.g., depression, anxiety, substance use disorder), and that the conjoint treatment be directed at ameliorating that condition (rather than improving the relationship).  In most cases this means that your health plan will not cover your marital or couple therapy.
